  Home About Me

My name is James Martin, and I've been a guitar player since 1994. In the twenty-plus years since I first fumbled my way onto the fretboard, music - and the guitar in particular - has been my abiding passion. In those first months since a schoolfriend showed me how to play a Nirvana song ("About A Girl") with two fingers I became completely and utterly addicted to the guitar, devouring every morsel of information I could find and devoting all my free time to practicing, learning and improving as much as I possibly could.

In 1996 I attended the Access To Music popular music course in Leicester, and my learning began in earnest as I mixed with many excellent musicians far more experienced than myself, and I soaked up all the information I could while in that environment. I left with a Diploma in Contemporary Popular Music, and a Rockschool Grade 8 qualification!

Since then, I've played in all manner of different bands - from sweat soaked clubs doing thrash metal to weddings and corporate functions with nothing but a nylon string classical guitar for company. I've played rock, pop, blues, country - even donning a tuxedo and playing cocktail lounge jazz! Between 2005 and 2007 I worked in a professional function band for both Bourne Leisure and Princess Cruises, playing music as far afield as the islands of the Carribean, and since 2007 I've been a full-time musical instrument tutor.

Along the way, I've written several books on guitar playing - Zero Point Guitar, Zero Point Bass and Progressive Guitar Training Volume 1 & 2, all of which are available in the eStore (Reviews here and here). I've also spent time as an examiner for Rockschool - the largest popular music examination board in the country - and was the featured teacher in Guitar Techniques magazine, issue 195. I am fully DBS checked and currently supplement private teaching with working at Castle Rock High School (Coalville) and Woodbrook Vale High School (Loughborough).

As well as teaching, I perform regularly with my two bands Guilty Pleasures and Dave The Rock Band, as well as dep work with many local bands and solo acoustic performances, and contribute articles to the Registry of Guitar Tutors blog and the popular site Ultimate Guitar.com. I am also working towards my next qualification, the Licentiate in Teaching from the London College Of Music. This is a degree level qualification, the highest available in guitar teaching.

       My qualifications include:

Licentiate Of The London College Of Music (Electric Guitar Performance)

Associate Of The London College Of Music (Electric Guitar Performance)

Diploma In Contemporary Popular Music

Rockschool Grade 8 guitar (distinction)

Rockschool Grade 8 bass (merit)

LCM Popular Music Theory Grade 8 (distinction)

Trinity classical guitar Grade 8 (merit)

RGT Acoustic Guitar Grade 8 (distinction)

Charity Music Project

Since 2013, each winter my students and I have collaborated on writing and recording an album of entirely original music to be released at Christmas with the proceeds going to charity. The students also have the opportunity to perform their songs at a specially organised event, and in 2014 we raised over £120 for UNICEF - check out the link to get involved. This is now an annual project and is a great opportunity for students to gain experience performing, recording and promoting their music in the real world.
